albino-rocca-barbaresco-montersino-2021
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2021

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino is drawn from a 0.42-hectare parcel at the southern tip of the appellation, in its highest and coolest corner.

Montersino lies close to Treiso at around 320 metres, on the ground where Barbaresco begins to climb towards the Alta Langa. Angelo Rocca planted the south-facing vines in 1998 on very poor clay and limestone slopes carrying thin layers of sandstone. Both the sandstone and the altitude push the site towards finesse: cool nights preserve aromatics and slow the ripening of Nebbiolo, while the meagre soil keeps yields naturally low. Daniela Rocca notes that this soil formation, known locally as Formazione di Lequio, is the same one found at Monforte and in parts of Serralunga in Barolo, which helps explain the firmer tannic frame here compared with the family holdings nearer the village. Vinification follows the house pattern of a long maceration and maturation in large oak casks rather than small barrels.

Worth cellaring, or decant it generously if opening young; serve at 16–18°C with brasato, roast guinea fowl or a wedge of aged Castelmagno.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
