albino-rocca-barbaresco-montersino-2022
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2022

Montersino sits at the southern tip of Barbaresco near Treiso, in the highest and coolest corner of the appellation.

The cru lies at 320 metres, and the Rocca family's parcel covers 0.42 hectares perched at its upper reaches. Angelo Rocca planted the south-facing vines in 1998 on very poor clay and limestone slopes threaded with thin layers of sandstone. Both the sandstone and the altitude push the wine towards finesse: cooler nights slow ripening and preserve aromatics, while the meagre soils keep vigour in check. Daniela Rocca points out that this soil type, known locally as the Formazione di Lequio, is the same geology found in Barolo's Monforte and parts of Serralunga, which helps explain the firmer structural spine here compared with the estate's warmer sites. Barbaresco requires a minimum of 26 months' ageing, at least nine in wood, before it can be released.

Tight in youth and worth five to ten years; decant and serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, hare ragu or aged Parmigiano.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
