albino-rocca-barbaresco-ovello-vigna-loreto-2022
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto 2022

Vigna Loreto is a tiny, effectively monopole parcel within Barbaresco's Ovello cru, first bottled separately by Albino Rocca in 1990.

Ovello spans a ridge with vines on both slopes, and within that large cru sit several historically delimited parcels. Rocca's Loreto is one of them, planted to vines now around 55 years old on the sunnier, southwest side of the ridge, where the nearby Tanaro moderates the climate and nights run cooler than on the ridge's other face. The clay and limestone soils here are sandier and lighter than elsewhere in Ovello, which gives the wines noticeably more finesse. Under the appellation rules, vines in Loreto must be cropped ten hectolitres per hectare below the rest of Ovello if the parcel name is to appear on the label, so the wine combines that finesse with real density. Barbaresco requires at least 26 months' ageing, nine of them in wood, before release.

Give it five years or decant well; serve at 16-18°C with braised veal, mushroom risotto or a well-aged hard cheese.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
