Charles Lachaux farms a thin band of vines in Les Rouges, where there is very little topsoil before the roots reach hard limestone, closer in make-up to the rock at Prémeaux than to the deeper soils lower down. That thin cover is what gives the wine its finesse and perfume rather than sheer weight. Fermentation is with whole bunches throughout and the wine is raised in Stockinger casks.
