Les Prarons Dessus is at the northern edge, next to Morgeot and just beneath the premier cru of Clos de Tavannes, and the chalky soils here carry a good proportion of red clay. Combined with old vines, that clay gives a darker, rounder Santenay with more flesh and finer tannins than the appellation's reputation would suggest. Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, based at Dezize-lès-Maranges, have moved steadily into Santenay over the past decade. This cuvée was fermented with one-third whole bunches and raised in traditional 228-litre barrels, of which 20 per cent were new, a light enough touch to keep the fruit and the clay in the foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrinking from two years and holding for eight or more.
