The clay-rich soils here give wines of perfumed depth and silken structure rather than the airier profile of the vineyards higher up the slope. Leroux has spoken of Santenots for years as the one Volnay vineyard he most wanted to work with, buying wine from it before he had vines of his own. His holding runs to a hectare of estate-owned vines around 70 years old, farmed organically.
