Montague, with its plump bunches, brings juice and crunch; Mule Plane, closer to the river and rockier, brings density and a darker, mineral cast. Both crop low, around four tonnes to the acre at Montague and two at Mule Plane, on fine sandy loam. The Mourvèdre balance was grafted over from 1920s Marsanne in the Besson vineyard using Beaucastel cuttings, and Krause says it fills in the texture the Carignan lacks. Montague fruit was destemmed, Mule Plane went in with whole bunches layered through, and everything spent about eight months in neutral wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe brighter and more immediately drinkable of the two Rhône blends here: red plum, crushed raspberry, dry herb and a savoury close. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, or lightly chilled in summer.
