Ca' d'Gal sits at Santo Stefano Belbo in the heart of the zone, and Alessandro Boido works a set of old parcels on the slope above the cellar. Vite Vecchia is drawn from the oldest of them, south-facing and rooted in blue tufa, the local clay-limestone marl. Vine age and exposure give small, deeply coloured golden bunches, and the wine that follows has a textural depth and vinosity well beyond the norm for the appellation, with a smoky mineral edge and a toasty development closer to an aged dry white than to a young frizzante.
