The zone was granted DOC status in 1966 and promoted to DOCG in 1980, among the first appellations in Italy to reach that rank. Nebbiolo ripens late here, often well into October, on calcareous marl soils, and the wine must be aged for a little over two years before release, of which at least nine months are spent in wood.
