Beychevelle sits at the southern end of it, on gravel rises that fall gently towards the estuary; the stones hold heat and drainage is sharp, conditions that suit Cabernet Sauvignon. The name is usually traced to the Duc d'Épernon, Grand Admiral of France in the late sixteenth century, whose ships were saluted with lowered sails as they passed the property.
