Saint-Estèphe sits at the northern end of the peninsula, where the gravel banks thin and clay comes closer to the surface; the wines are correspondingly firm and slow to mature, built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
