The appellation's limestone plateau and clay slopes are a continuation of Saint-Émilion's, the boundary between the two being administrative rather than geological, and the wines are made from much the same varieties: Merlot in the lead, with Cabernet Franc and, here, a little Malbec, a grape once widespread across Bordeaux and now confined to a few pockets.
