Mouton sits on the gravel rise at the northern edge of Pauillac, close to the Gironde, and has been in Rothschild hands since 1853. Its promotion from second to first growth in 1973 remains the only revision ever made to the 1855 classification, the result of decades of work by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who also began the tradition of commissioning an artist for each year's label.
