He has worked outside the conventions of the district ever since: the estate stands apart from the Saint-Émilion classification and the wine is sold simply as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Yields are very low, picking is exceptionally late, and the wine is raised in a high proportion of new oak. Merlot dominates the south facing clay and limestone slopes, with Cabernet Franc in support.
