Garnacha Tintorera is the local name for Alicante Bouschet, a nineteenth-century crossing bred by Henri Bouschet and one of very few grapes with red flesh as well as red skin. It suits the poor limestone soils and hard continental climate of south-eastern Spain, where old bush vines endure long droughts and give small crops. Reserva is a legally defined term in Spain: a red carrying it must spend at least three years ageing before release, a minimum of twelve months of that in oak.
