Its soils are more varied than its neighbour's, with sandy and limestone rich sites alongside patches of slate, and the wines are generally lighter framed and earlier drinking as a result. Grenache and Samsó, the Catalan name for Carignan, are the traditional varieties, often from old bush vines, with Syrah a common modern addition. The wine comes from the team behind Clos Figueras at Gratallops, who farm on both sides of the boundary and treat Montsant as more than an afterthought.
