Its name recalls the knight Gaspard de Sterimberg, who settled on the hill in the 13th century and built the Saint Christophe chapel, giving rise to the story behind the Hermitage name. Today, La Chapelle remains one of the appellation’s historic benchmark wines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe wine comes from 40- to 100-year-old vines on the steep western slopes of Hermitage, drawing on several important parcels including Les Bessards, Varogne, Le Méal and Rocoules. Granite soils in Les Bessards and Varogne bring structure and intensity, while the limestone and pebble-strewn terraces of Le Méal and Rocoules contribute a broader, more supple expression of Syrah.
