Les Trois Roches is named for the three parcels behind it: Rochegrès, Roche Noire and La Rochelle, where the vines now average more than forty years of age. La Rochelle, which overlooks the famous windmill, brings structure; east-facing Rochegrès contributes finesse and supple tannins; Roche Noire supplies liveliness and juicy fruit. What the three sites share is a concentration of manganese in the soil, which runs an unmistakable mineral, faintly ferrous thread through the finished wine. Unlike Chermette's other crus, this one is given a portion of barrique ageing, around twenty per cent, which says something about the intensity of the site. This is Gamay made for the cellar as much as for the table.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRewarding now but worth two or three years in bottle first.
