Altitude and thin, stony soil make it a cool site that ripens late, and the wines it gives are taut and more mineral in cast than the broader, fleshier style of the vineyards on the lower ground east of the main road. Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest commune of the Côte de Nuits and home to nine grand crus, Chambertin and Clos de Bèze among them, but sites like this one show what the appellation can do outside the classified slope.
