Marsannay is the northernmost village appellation of the Côte de Nuits, recognised only in the late nineteen eighties, and the only commune on the Côte d'Or permitted to make red, white and rosé under its own name. The vineyards lie over limestone scree and clay, cooler ground than the villages further south, and the reds have a firm, dark fruited character with tannins that repay a few years in bottle.
