Bouland's parcel sits in the lieu-dit Tête Noire, directly above Château Thivin, planted at 12,000 vines to the hectare on that blue schist. The vines are around 70 years old and, as across the domaine, cropped at low yields. Fermentation is natural and whole-bunch and the wine is bottled without fining. Set against the estate's Chiroubles, this is the more baritone of the two, with darker, plusher fruit and deeper spice, and a structural chassis that carries the extra weight comfortably. A 1.5-litre magnum slows its development, which suits a cuvée with this much frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eApproachable after a year or two and good for five to eight years in magnum.
