In his book on the Chavignol vineyard, Thibaut Boulay records the site appearing in documents of 1328 as the Clausus de Bellojoco. The slope is Kimmeridgian limestone and clay, the local terres blanches, particularly rocky and strewn with fossils, which makes it difficult to farm; vine age runs from 30 to a remarkable 110 years. A second, steeper parcel closer to the village climbs at a 60 per cent gradient. These south-east-facing plots give the most structured and nervy wines at the domaine. The wine ferments spontaneously and rests for ten months, 60 per cent in large upright cask and 40 per cent in three- and four-year-old 300-litre barrels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStill reserved and worth five years or more, with decades of potential behind that.
