La Roche Vineuse sits in the northern Maconnais, on limestone and clay slopes. Les Cras is a named site within the village; the name recurs all over Burgundy and is generally taken to describe stony, chalky ground, the kind of poor soil that limits vigour. Bottling a Macon by individual parcel was, not so long ago, an unusual thing to do, and it reflects a conviction that these slopes repay the same attention as those further north.
