Vieilles vignes simply means old vines, a term with no legal definition in France but real meaning in practice: older plants carry smaller crops, root more deeply and tend to ride out hot or dry seasons better than young ones. La Roche Vineuse lies in the northern Maconnais on clay and limestone slopes, higher and a touch cooler than much of the region. The whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel and given a long elevage on lees, the sort of treatment once reserved for the Cote d'Or.
