Where neighbouring Les Grandes Ruchottes and La Grande Montagne give airy, lifted wines, La Romanée works from the bedrock up. The family's 0.49 hectares were planted by Thierry Pillot's grandfather more than 70 years ago, and there is next to no topsoil above the limestone. Altitude, aspect, old vines and stone together give a wine of unusual concentration and mineral depth, closer in scale to the grand crus above than to a typical premier cru.
