Pierre Gaillard, who has holdings throughout the northern Rhône, draws this wine from four parcels: Côte Bellay, Les Patasses at Malleval, Boissey at Chavanay and La Caille in Condrieu itself. Each sits on soils of fine, decomposing granite, the arzelle that gives the appellation its combination of perfume and stony grip. Yields here came in at 30 hectolitres per hectare, and the wine spent seven months in oak, of which ten per cent was new, so the wood supports texture rather than adding flavour.
