The Côte Brune, with its iron-rich schist, gives the darker and firmer wines of the appellation. This warm, amphitheatre-shaped parcel sits just below the famous La Landonne and is criss-crossed with the dry stone walls the area is known for, which hold heat and magnify an already sunny microclimate; that is much of the reason for the depth and structure of the wines from this terroir. Pierre Gaillard harvests by hand and destems the fruit entirely before crushing. Ageing runs to 18 months in new Allier and Nevers barrels, which a wine of this concentration is able to absorb.
