Its best vineyards are a continuation of the Volnay slope on the same limestone, which is why good Monthelie shares something of Volnay's fine boned, red fruited style at a fraction of the price, while the parcels turned into the side valley are cooler and firmer. Les Barbières is one of the commune's premiers crus on the slope above the village.
