The Chardonnay at Tuerong ripens ahead of everything else and gives Barney Flanders his first read on the season, a role it has played since he took the site on in 2012. The vines are 34 years old, dry-grown and north-facing, rooted in grey-black sandy soils over brown sandy loam, and they are the oldest he works with. Picked by hand and pressed as bunches, it fermented in 500-litre puncheons of second and third fill, then rested nine months on full gross lees, entirely undisturbed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStruck match first, then summer citrus, spring florals, a flick of salt and a lovely doughy character. Pure and fleshy, stitched together by mouthwatering acidity and sinewy phenolics.
