Girlan is a growers' co-operative based at Cornaiano, in the hills above Bolzano, drawing on members' plots scattered from the valley floor to the steep slopes. This blend is built on two indigenous Südtirol grapes, Lagrein and Schiava, alongside Pinot Noir, a variety long at home on these terroirs. The Lagrein comes from the deep, sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a warmer site that ripens the variety reliably, while the Pinot Noir and Schiava grow on the sunny, well-aerated hillside vineyards of Cornaiano. Raising the wine in a mix of stainless steel, barrel and concrete keeps the fruit forward and the tannins supple, with no obvious oak signature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFleshy and juicy, it is made for drinking now and over the next three or four years, and handles woodfired pizza, speck and grilled polenta.
