Côte Brune, on darker iron bearing schist, gives a firmer and longer lived wine; Côte Blonde, on paler granite and gneiss, gives a softer and more perfumed one. Blending the two is the traditional Côte-Rôtie practice, and this wine is its clearest expression. Syrah dominates, with the small proportion of Viognier the appellation permits, often co-fermented with the red grapes, a habit found almost nowhere else in France.
