Its core remains those terraced slopes, worked by hand because they are far too steep for machinery, and the lieu-dit Saint-Joseph is the historic parcel itself. Guigal came into these vineyards with the purchase of the Grippat and de Vallouit estates in 2001, which brought the family some of the appellation's oldest vines. The wine is pure Syrah, the only red grape permitted here, fermented from destemmed fruit and aged in oak for roughly two years before bottling.
