Larnage, by contrast, was the historic centre of the appellation, a valley of stony red clay, loess and fractured, oxidised granite that gives finer, cooler-fruited Syrah. Altitude of around 200 metres and that granite are the key factors, along with the age and pruning of the vines, which are goblet-trained and were planted in the 1950s and 1960s. Souillard is part of the younger generation working the northern Rhône with a light touch. The cuvée was fermented with mostly whole clusters and raised for 14 months in mature casks, giving a compact, fresh and precise Crozes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrink now to ten years.
