Joh Jos Prüm, based at Wehlen, is one of the reference estates of the middle Mosel and its wines are famous for combining very low alcohol with the ability to age for half a century. Gold capsule bottlings are, in Katharina Prüm's words, limited lots of the best Auslese of a vintage, made from stronger, selected grapes with more concentrated juice and usually a degree of botrytis. Making them this year required multiple passes and draconian selection, with harvest running into the last days of October. Botrytis was rare, but the botrytis-affected fruit brought in accounted for roughly a third of the material.
