luciano-sandrone-barbera-d-alba-2018
Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba 2018

Sandrone's Barbera comes from three named vineyards — Merli, Rocche di San Nicola and Cascina Pe Mol — farmed to the same low yields as the estate's Nebbiolo.

Barbera d'Alba covers the Langhe hills around Alba, where Barbera has long been the grape growers kept for their own table: high in acidity, low in tannin and quick to give pleasure. Luciano Sandrone began with a single plot on Cannubi in 1977 and made his first wine in 1978 in his parents' garage, building a cellar below the hill that opened in 1998; Barbara Sandrone has managed the estate day to day since the 1990s. The house sits deliberately between camps — a medium-length maceration, shorter than the traditional Langhe norm, and very little new oak, with maturation in 500-litre tonneaux rather than small barriques. Vineyard work is exacting, with severe pruning and training aimed at keeping crops small, and the Barbera is treated with the same attention as the Barolo.

Ready on release and good for several years yet. Serve at 16-18°C with tagliatelle al ragù, salumi or a mushroom risotto.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
