Luciano Sandrone farms 1.9 hectares of forty-year-old vines here on a south to south-east facing slope that forms a small amphitheatre, or conca, holding warmth through the early morning. The soils are marine deposits of calcareous clay with a sand fraction, which drains freely. Alessandro Masnaghetti's survey of the Barolo crus notes that the wines of this section carry good body, considerable elegance and more polished tannins than the rest of the hill. Renamed Aleste in recent vintages after Sandrone's grandchildren, the wine remains entirely Cannubi Boschis fruit. Vinification follows the same path as Le Vigne, with wild yeast fermentation and long ageing in mostly used 500-litre French oak casks, but with a slightly longer time on skins. The 1.5-litre format slows the ageing curve and suits a long stay in the cellar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBest given a decade in bottle, and decanted well ahead if opened sooner.
