Valmaggiore is a three-hectare amphitheatre that Sandrone identified some thirty years ago, when Roero was still dismissed; he had worked with fruit from the area as cellarmaster at Marchesi di Barolo and backed his judgement. Buying out the growers on the slope, terracing ground that runs to a fifty per cent gradient and replanting at 8,000 vines per hectare was a considerable risk, since the sandy soil dries out and erodes easily. Farming is organic. The wine is fermented and raised in the same unhurried way as the estate's Barolos, and shows the finer, more aromatic side of the grape rather than its denser one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eApproachable young and worth five to eight years in a magnum.
