The Sandrone family established a continuous three-hectare holding in the Valmaggiore area in the early 1990s. It is a spectacularly steep terraced site, reaching a fifty per cent gradient in places, planted at a relatively high density of 8,000 vines per hectare. The chalky sand produces a markedly scented and elegant expression of the variety, with finer tannin than the denser clay-grown wines. The vineyard is farmed organically and picked with a strict sort, and vine age now contributes noticeably to the concentration of the fruit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore approachable young than a Barolo, though it will keep for the best part of a decade.
