Each year 10 to 15 per cent of production of the Nebbiolo wines is held back in the winery's underground cellars and re-released closer to maturity: six years after the harvest for Valmaggiore, ten years for the Barolos. Each re-release carries a stamp on the label to distinguish it from the original bottling. Valmaggiore sits in the Roero, across the Tanaro from Barolo, among the finest Nebbiolo sites outside the two great appellations. Its slopes are very steep and its soils close to pure sand, giving Nebbiolo a finer, more perfumed and less imposing tannic frame than the clay and marl of the Langhe.
