massolino-barbaresco-2020
Massolino Barbaresco 2020

Massolino's Barbaresco is blended from three parcels in the commune of Neive, on the eastern side of the appellation.

Barbaresco DOCG sits across the Tanaro from Barolo and is made from the same grape, Nebbiolo, generally producing wines of slightly more immediate perfume and finer tannin. Massolino is a Serralunga d'Alba family better known for its Barolo, and its Barbaresco draws on Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. Serraboella accounts for the lion's share of the blend and is one of the most highly regarded sites in the eastern sector of Neive, with the estate's vines on the preferred southwest-facing hill on light soils above the village. Starderi, on the western side of Neive, is a sunnier terroir that adds power and flesh. Albesani is the best known of the three. The winemaking hardly differs from the Barolo cellar: natural fermentation in large oak fermenters, around 12 to 15 days on skins, then 18 months in 5,000-litre Slavonian oak casks.

Approachable earlier than the Barolos but good for a decade or more; decant and serve at 17°C with braised veal, mushroom risotto or hard alpine cheese.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
