massolino-barbaresco-2021
Massolino Barbaresco 2021

Massolino's Barbaresco is a blend of three parcels in Neive, made in the same way as the estate's Barolo.

Barbaresco DOCG lies across the Tanaro from Barolo and works the same grape, Nebbiolo, on lower, warmer hills that generally give a more perfumed and finer-boned wine. Serraboella accounts for the lion's share of the blend and is one of the most highly regarded sites in the eastern sector of Neive, with Massolino's vines on the preferred southwest-facing hill on light soils overlooking the village. Starderi, on the western side of Neive, is a sunnier terroir that brings power and flesh. Albesani, the best known of the three, is also bottled on its own by the estate. The winemaking hardly differs from the Barolo cellar: natural fermentation in large oak fermenters, about 12 to 15 days on skins, then 18 months in 5,000-litre Slavonian oak casks, with no small barrels involved.

Pretty and fine, with juicy fruit and powdery tannins, it is approachable now and will keep for a decade; serve at 17°C with roast poultry, veal or hard alpine cheese.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
