There is very little topsoil here, and what there is carries a high concentration of limestone, oxidised iron and other minerals; the soils trace back to the Lequio Formation, the oldest in the Barolo area, and the limestone content of around 20% is among the highest in the zone, limiting vigour and ensuring full phenolic ripeness. The vineyard lies between 250 and 360 metres with a south-southwest aspect that shelters it from northerly winds and frost. Massolino bottle only about a third of the potential volume under this label, with the rest going into the classic Barolo. As a Riserva it is held back longer in cask and bottle before release.

This is a wine for the long haul: give it ten years and expect it to run for thirty. Serve at 16–18°C, decanted, with braised beef, game birds or truffle.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur.
