There is very little topsoil, and the subsoil belongs to the Lequio Formation, the oldest in the Barolo zone, with a limestone content of around twenty per cent alongside oxidised iron and other minerals. That limits vine vigour and ensures full phenolic ripeness in the Nebbiolo. The vineyard runs from 250 to 360 metres with a south-southwesterly aspect that shelters it from northerly wind and frost. Massolino makes a strict selection, bottling only about a third of the potential volume under the single-vineyard label and sending the rest to the classic Barolo. The result is a wine of unusual completeness, with the acidity and tannin Serralunga is known for.
