Massolino draws on three roughly equal sources. The first is parcels in Serralunga that do not make the cut for the cru wines, in effect declassified Barolo fruit. The second is Cascina I Maschi on the edge of Monforte d'Alba, a cool, chalky site that lifts perfume and freshness. The third is a parcel at Alba on lighter sandy-clay soils, which supplies flesh and fruit generosity. Vinification is in concrete with deliberately gentle extraction, and the wine spends twelve months in large Slavonian oak casks, as all Massolino Nebbiolo does, rather than the twenty-four months or more given to the Barolo.
