It was first planted more than 700 years ago, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Pfalz, and a site that survives that long usually has something to say for itself. Müller-Catoir makes a Grosses Gewächs from a small parcel within the vineyard, Im Breumel, while the greater share, culled from the Gehren and Aspen micro-terroirs, goes into this Erste Lage or classified first growth bottling. Bürgergarten's topsoils are sandy and deep over yellow sandstone bedrock, a combination that brings power, perfume and intense mineral freshness. Farming is organic. The wine was naturally fermented and raised for 10 months in a mixture of steel tanks and five-year-old 600-litre Halbstück ovals, around a quarter of the volume, a regime the estate finds gives more expressive, less reductive wines that show well on release.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReady now and good for a decade.
