Müller-Catoir makes a GG from one small parcel within it, Im Breumel, while the larger share, taken from the Gehren and Aspen micro-terroirs, goes into this Erste Lage, or first growth, bottling. The topsoil is deep and sandy over yellow sandstone bedrock, a combination that brings power, perfume and intense mineral freshness. The estate farms organically. The wine fermented naturally and spent ten months in a mixture of steel tanks and five-year-old 600-litre halbstück ovals, about a quarter of the volume; Martin Franzen finds that this, allied with extended lees ageing, gives a more expressive and less reductive wine that is approachable on release.
