In the VDP classification a village wine sits above the estate tier and below the classified sites and, as in Burgundy, it may draw on several vineyards, including fruit declassified from higher-ranked ones. That is the case here: this bottling includes young-vine material from Bürgergarten, rated Grosses Gewächs, together with the classified sites of Herzog, Mandelring and Herrenletten. Müller-Catoir has been in the same family since the eighteenth century and farms organically. The Pfalz is warm and dry by German standards, and its sandstone gives Riesling a broader shape than slate does, though the wine is finished dry and the acidity is held in place.
