Hans-Günter Schwarz, cellar master from 1962 to 2002, brought it to Müller-Catoir and planted it in the Herzog vineyard at Haardt; the sweet wines he made from that site have long since disappeared into private cellars, and Martin Franzen has taken up the work with equal enthusiasm since 2003. What makes the variety so useful here is its inclination to botrytis even in dry years while it keeps very high acidity, which is what stops a wine at this sugar level from going flat and heavy. Trockenbeerenauslese is picked berry by berry from shrivelled, botrytised fruit, so yields are tiny.
