Michael Downer's take, made alongside Peter Dredge, runs 70 per cent estate Syrah from Oakbank against 30 per cent Pinot Noir off the Piccadilly Valley, both from vines past twenty years of age. The two were wild-fermented separately in small open vats, then settled into barrique and puncheon with only 8 per cent new wood. Downer describes the aim as marrying the forest character of Ashton Pinot to the slippery, stalk-inflected Syrah grown at home.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJuicy and medium-weight, with raspberry and dark plum, a lick of pepper and a soft line of tannin. Fifteen degrees suits it.
