Barbera is the workhorse of Piedmont, the grape growers traditionally drank themselves, naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, and it is usually given the sites that Nebbiolo does not want. The Scavino family has been based at Castiglione Falletto since 1921, and Enrico Scavino, now working with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, built the estate's reputation on single-vineyard Barolo from the late 1970s onward. The Barbera is farmed and vinified with the same attention.
